At FishmanVision you can elect to have your ocular wellness exam performed by Dr. Harvey Fishman (MD) and associates.

Why have an ocular wellness examination?

Many eye diseases and problems have no early warning symptoms, and as a result, an estimated 1 out of every 19 Americans suffers from poor vision. The technology available at Dr. Fishman’s practice enables early detection of vision problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, optic nerve disease, cataracts. Moreover, the ophthalmic exam can identify many systemic disease. Routine eye examinations are the best safeguard for maintaining good vision.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the following guidelines for scheduling eye exams:

  • Children should have their first eye exams by age 5. Earlier examinations are recommended if there are problems such as crossed eyes or a family history of a lazy eye (amblyopia.) After that, children with normal vision should be screened every two years.
  • People between the ages of 20 and 39 only need eye examinations if a noticeable change in vision occurs. People in this age group who wear corrective lenses should schedule an exam every year. Anyone in this age group at risk for glaucoma or who know they have eye disease should have an exam every year.
  • Beginning at age 40, regular eye exams should be scheduled every two years. If a change in vision is noticed, an exam should be scheduled immediately.
  • At 65 yearly exams are necessary to rule out glaucoma, cataracts or other age-related eye diseases.
