How to detect cardiac irregularities during the eye exam!

Ocular Pulse!

Shown is the ocular pulse as seen by Dr. Fishman (www.fishmanvision.com) as he measures eye pressure using the Goldmann tonometer. As the heart beats, the pulsating blood pressure wave can be seen as pulsations in the tonometer mires. Cardiovascular activity can be detected by measuring various parameters of the ocular pulse. It has long been known that irregular heartbeats (such as atrial fibrillation) can be demonstrated during Goldmann applanation tonometry. Pretty cool, huh?
